There were more than 7 million new cases of Covid-19 reported in the WHO’s Europe region during the first week of 2022, agency officials said, more than doubling over two weeks.
As of Monday, more than 141,000 Americans were in hospital with Covid-19, while the U.S. reported the highest daily infection count of any country since the pandemic started.
The string of new deals announced Monday include a potential deal with gene editing specialist Beam Therapeutics, including a $300 million upfront payment.
Researchers said the findings help explain why some people don’t get infected and could help create a universal vaccine against current and future variants.
Low vaccine uptake and the contagious omicron variant are likely driving the surge, though some reports suggest the variant could be causing unique lung complications in kids.
